What is Arthritis?
Arthritis, or more specifically osteoarthritis, is when the cartilage in your joints break down, often in your hips, knees, shoulders, hands and wrist, foot and ankle, and spine. When this happens, it can cause pain, limited range of motion, and cause the fluid in the joint to break down. As osteoarthritis progresses, it can cause more severe pain, more loss of range of motion, and cause most people to have a severely decreased quality of life.
Arthritis usually develops after an injury and can take years to progress. Many people don’t feel the pain from arthritis until many years after the initial injury, after the joint has degenerated enough to cause pain. Arthritis can also develop after normal wear and tear and poor posture.
Can Arthritis be Treated?
While an arthritic joint may never return to its completely normal state, arthritis, in the knee for example, can be treated and managed without the use of drugs and surgery. Depending on the severity of the arthritis, many treatments such as knee viscosupplementation (Supartz®), knee bracing, and/or physical rehabilitation can successfully treat arthritis, eliminate pain, and get you functioning again!
